The iconic blockbuster Thalapathi, starring Mammootty and Rajinikanth in lead roles, is all set to make a grand return to theaters after 34 years.
The re-release is scheduled for Rajinikanth‘s birthday, December 12, 2024.
Directed by the legendary Mani Ratnam, Thalapathi also features a stellar cast that includes Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana, Geetha, and Arvind Swami. The film was produced by G. Venkateswaran, with music composed by the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, marking his last collaboration with Mani Ratnam. The script is based on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana, characters from the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
Thalapathi was known for its exceptional cinematography by Santosh Sivan, editing by Suresh Urs, and its remarkable soundtrack. The film’s budget of Rs 3 crore at the time made it the most expensive South Indian film of its era. Most of the filming took place in Karnataka.
Released on Diwali, November 5, 1991, Thalapathi became a massive hit both commercially and critically, winning several prestigious awards, including two Filmfare South Awards: Best Director (Mani Ratnam) and Best Music Director (Ilaiyaraaja), along with two Cinema Express Awards for Best Actor (Rajinikanth) and Best Character Actress (Srividya). The film was later remade in Kannada as Annavru in 2003.
Fans of Thalapathi can now relive the magic of this timeless classic on the big screen once again, just in time for Rajinikanth’s special day.
